FMCSA asks for comment on camera system replacing truck rear-view mirrors
On July 30, 2026, FMCSA published a notice in the Federal Register seeking public input on an exemption application from Transit Solutions, LLC. The company is asking FMCSA to allow commercial motor vehicles to operate with its ClearView E-Mirror camera monitor system installed as an alternative to the two rear-vision mirrors that the federal parts-and-accessories regulations (49 CFR Part 393) normally require.
This is a request for comment on an exemption application — it is not a proposed rule and not a change to the mirror requirement. Nothing changes for any carrier unless and until FMCSA grants the exemption, and even then it would apply only to vehicles equipped with the named system under whatever conditions FMCSA sets.
The notice is filed under Docket No. FMCSA-2026-0859. Per the Federal Register, "Comments must be received on or before August 31, 2026."
FMCSA has handled camera-mirror requests from other manufacturers as individual exemptions in the past, so the practical effect of this one, if granted, is another approved system on the list rather than a change to the underlying rule.
What this means for your operation
For a small fleet, the mirror rule is unchanged: two rear-vision mirrors, or a specifically exempted camera system on that specific vehicle, or it is a roadside violation. If a used truck or a spec sheet shows a camera-mirror setup, check that the system holds a current FMCSA exemption and keep a copy of it in the cab, because inspectors will ask. The comment window is open until August 31 for anyone who wants to weigh in.
