DVIRs Can Now Be Fully Electronic — FMCSA's Final Rule Explained

FMCSA's Electronic DVIR final rule (published February 19, 2026) confirms that Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports can be created, signed, and maintained entirely electronically. Carriers already using an ELD or fleet-management platform can complete DVIRs digitally and stay fully compliant — no paper inspection book required.

The practical win is recordkeeping. Electronic DVIRs are timestamped, harder to lose, and instantly retrievable — which matters when an auditor or roadside inspector asks for them.

If you're still on paper, this isn't a mandate to switch overnight, but it removes the last reason to stay on paper. Going digital cuts a daily friction point for drivers and closes a common gap auditors look for.
