CVSA's Operation Safe Driver Week runs July 12-18, focused on reckless driving
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance's Operation Safe Driver Week is set for July 12-18, 2026. CVSA announced the dates earlier this year; trade coverage on June 30 put the enforcement week back on carriers' radar two weeks out.
Unlike Roadcheck, this is not a vehicle inspection blitz. Law enforcement across North America will be watching how commercial and passenger-vehicle drivers behave on the road — speeding, distracted driving, following too closely, unsafe lane changes, seatbelt use, disregarding signals — and issuing warnings or citations. CVSA's stated goal is to change driver behavior through education, traffic enforcement and direct interaction with officers.
The 2026 focus area is reckless, careless or dangerous driving, the same emphasis as the past two years. CVSA defines reckless driving as operating a vehicle "in willful or wanton disregard for the safety of people or property" and careless driving as operating "without proper attention or reasonable consideration for others."
For context, FreightWaves reported CVSA's 2025 results: officers in the U.S. and Canada stopped 8,739 vehicles and issued 2,504 citations and 3,575 warnings. Speeding dominated, with 917 citations and 1,249 warnings, while the reckless-driving category itself produced 20 citations and 53 warnings.
What this means for your operation
Driver-side violations recorded during this week feed FMCSA's Safety Measurement System and raise your Unsafe Driving score, which affects inspection selection, broker vetting and insurance renewals. A 1-10 truck operation has few inspections to average against, so one speeding ticket weighs more than it would for a large fleet. Brief every driver on the dates and the focus area before July 12, and make sure your dispatch isn't pushing schedules that only work at 75 mph. WeLink's safety and compliance desk tracks these enforcement windows for the carriers we support and reviews DataQs-eligible violations afterward — but the week itself is won or lost by the driver's right foot.
