CVSA hazmat blitz results: 683 vehicles out of service, cargo securement the top violation

On September 10, 2026, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance released the results of its unannounced hazardous materials/dangerous goods inspection and compliance enforcement initiative, which ran June 8-12, 2026. Inspectors in the U.S. and Canada conducted 5,046 inspections of commercial motor vehicles carrying hazardous materials or dangerous goods over the five days.

In total, 683 vehicles were placed out of service, a 13.5% out-of-service rate. In the U.S., 4,122 inspections resulted in 500 vehicles (12.1%) placed out of service; in Canada, 924 inspections resulted in 183 vehicles (19.8%) placed out of service. Inspectors also examined 5,805 Class 1-9 packages.

Cargo securement was the largest source of out-of-service violations. Inspectors recorded 128 out-of-service cargo securement violations, the kind that could let a package shift and leak or spill. They also identified 29 out-of-service package-integrity (leaking) violations.

On the other side of the ledger, inspectors affixed 1,187 CVSA decals to 794 power units and 393 trailers, meaning those vehicles had no critical vehicle or specification cargo-tank violations at the time of inspection.
