Lawmakers Move to Crack Down on 'Chameleon' Carriers

"Chameleon carriers" are companies that shut down and re-register under a new name to shed a poor safety history or enforcement record. A provision in the House highway bill (the BUILD America 250 Act) aims to make that harder.

For legitimate carriers, tighter scrutiny of new registrations is generally good news — it levels a field that bad actors have exploited. It can also mean more documentation and verification when you set up or change your operating authority.

This is still moving through Congress, not yet law. We'll track where it lands and what, if anything, changes for honest operators.
